Eastern Brown Snake (pseudonaja textilis)

Identification: Colour can vary from almost black through to light brown with or without flecks of black or white. Underbody can be cream, yellow or orange always with blotches of orange or grey. Sometimes feature white or lighter coloured heads which lead to misidentification as a Coastal Taipan.
Juvenile Brown Snakes often exhibit black banding and heads contrasting with orange or cream body colour. Most will lose these traits as they grow but some will retain light coloured banding into adulthood.
A diurnal or day active snake but can sometimes be found out after dusk during very hot periods of weather. An average adult size would be 1.2- 1.5 metres though over 2 metre examples have been caught.

Range and Habitat: Common throughout south eastern Queensland including the Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich areas. Favours drier areas further from permanant water courses that other snakes. Very common in cleared land and grazing land bordering towns and cities. Has been thriving due to tree clearing and the introduction of the House mouse to its diet.

Eastern Brown Snakes are known for their nervous disposition striking repeatedly when provoked.
Bites from this species have caused human fatalities. If bitten first aid should be applied immediately and medical attention sought.
